Patterns of connection
Hi, I’m Nisha Chilaka.
I create patterns shaped by the subtle connections between people, nature, and everyday surroundings.
I’m drawn to the quiet relationship between things—how elements we pass without notice begin to echo each other when observed closely.
A flower gathered without occasion.
Light tracing patterns across a wall.
Petals, stripes, textures, forms that seem unrelated, yet begin to mirror one another in unexpected ways.
I often find myself connecting these fragments, noticing how nature and everyday life speak to each other through form and detail.
These observations stay with me, gradually evolving into patterns that carry both memory and meaning.
My Story
My journey into design has evolved over time. With a background in business and experience in client-facing roles, I developed a strong sense of structure and understanding of how design lives beyond aesthetics. I later ran a boutique focused on ethnic wear, where I explored textiles more closely and built a hands-on connection with patterns, materials, and storytelling through design.
Moving to Vancouver marked a turning point, where I formally stepped into surface pattern design. Since then, I have been creating collections inspired by nature, memory, and the connection between the two, translating fleeting moments into prints that can live across different surfaces.
My design approach is intuitive and often try blending floral elements, organic textures, and gentle narratives. I am drawn to creating work that feels both timeless and contemporary, patterns that don’t overpower a space, but quietly become part of it.
Why I Design
I design to capture what can’t always be explained.Certain colours, forms, and patterns carry a sense of familiarity like something remembered but not fully defined. My work is a way of exploring those feelings and giving them a visual form.
Spaces influence how we feel, often without us realizing it.Patterns have the ability to soften, energize, or ground a space. I am interested in creating designs that become part of that experience—subtle, adaptable, and lasting.
When I’m not designing, I’m often observing textures in nature, collecting visual references, or finding inspiration in everyday life. I believe good design doesn’t shout—it lingers.
From wall coverings to textiles and home décor, I approach design with scale, repeat, and end-use in mind and also creating work that integrates into a space while still holding character. I am open to licensing opportunities, custom design projects, and collaborations with brands and creative teams across interiors, textiles, and lifestyle spaces.
Based in Dubai and working globally.
If my work aligns with what you’re building, I’d love to connect.
